The African Development Bank

In 2002, (Northern Lights Consultants or NLFC) were engaged by the Private Sector Department of the ADB, with Canadian bilateral funding, to carry out novel research in the area of franchising and its potential for SME development in the African context. Through extensive research, acute analysis, teamwork and interaction with the key players in the field, the final report, published by the ADB as “Enhancing Development in Africa: Franchising Report”, has been acclaimed by the private and public sector in Africa as well as by other international partners as groundbreaking work.  Indeed, it has served as the basis on which the ADB has defined the key axes of a continent-wide Franchising Initiative, which is to tackle the main constraints to franchising’s development in the continent, as identified in the Report.  

The Report, and its companion work, the "Franchising Toolkit", certainly constitute a powerful tool in our efforts to generate awareness about this important private sector development issue in Africa and build capacity in the private and public sectors across the continent.   The quality and depth of NLFC’s work is thoroughly appreciated by us at the ADB, as we believe they have made a valuable contribution towards the development of the private sector in Africa, particularly with regards to franchising.
